REEFTON PORTRAITS
A portraitseries of New Zealands best bullriding cowboys. The pictures have been taken directly after the abandoning of the cowboys. This is part of the exhibition at the Pavlov-s Dog Gallery, Bergstr. 19, 10115 Berlin/Mitte till 23rd Sept 2012...
“(...)The desire to be a cowboy is first and foremost of an aesthetical nature. It is the desire to wear a hat, boots with spurs, dusty and raunchy trousers as well as the desire to swing your lariat. (...) In the fight with the bull the wannabe-cowboy competes with his beastly counterpart. The fact that is most intriguing about Rodeo is that the outcome is completely pre-determined and predictable: Contrary to the Spanish version of the bullfight – where the bull is condemned to always lose the fight and pay with its life – in the rodeo version the bull will always win and the rider will always lose and fall to the ground.
