A major volcanic eruption in 2021 reduced the western part of the Canary Island of La Palma to rubble and ashes... The new Tajogaite volcano was formed. The name comes from the language of the indigenous people and means ‘split mountain’. The 85-day eruption shaped the landscape and destroyed around 1,200 buildings on the island, while the resulting lava flow increased the island's size by almost 50 hectares.
